He held her against the door, his body drained, his mind steeped in the scent of her.

“That was good,” he murmured in her ear. But the words weren’t right, too small, no emotion, not enough to describe the way her body had worked him as she climaxed around him. Not enough to describe the communion of two heavenly bodies.

“Do you remember me?” he asked into her fragrant hair.

“Remember you?” she echoed.

“I went to high school with your brother. We played football together.”

“Oh.” She was silent a moment. “Well, yes, I think I actually do now that you mention it.” She sighed. He felt the lush warmth of her breath against his cheek. “I thought your name was Bennett, though. I didn’t connect you.”

Fuck. He’d been the kid who played ball with her brother, that’s all. She’d been his ideal.

They’d been away from the party too long. He didn’t want the guys thinking bad thoughts about her. Pulling back, he let her feet slide to the floor. He turned, tossed the condom in the trash. He’d dropped the wrapper on the floor in the heat of the moment, and bending, he scooped it up, throwing it away, too. Then he zipped up.

She’d already wriggled back into her leather pants and was stepping into her boot.

“Well, thanks,” she said. “I gotta go.” Her cheeks flamed with embarrassment.

He pushed her against the door again, trapped her with his body. “Not so quick.”

She bit her lip. “My party act is over.”

He didn’t want her to regret this. He didn’t want her embarrassment. “I don’t do that with just any woman.”

“Neither do I.” She gulped. “I meant I don’t do it with just any man.”

He held her face in his hands. “I want to see you again.”

“I—”

Someone tried the knob. Then the sound of a key. He pulled her away from the door, but it wasn’t as if there was anywhere to hide.

At least they had their clothes on when the door opened. The kid was young, his white uniform jacket stained with sauce. He gaped, then his mouth worked, no words coming out.

“Oh, thank you,” Carolina said, gripping his arm. “The guys at the party played a joke on us and locked us in here. I didn’t think anyone would find us until the restaurant closed down. Thank you, thank you.” Then she shot past the boy and out into the hall.

Her boot skidded on the linoleum, but she caught herself before Mark could reach her.

She didn’t look back, she simply ran, disappearing around the corner.

He did a two-step with the kid for a minute, and by the time he made it back to the banquet room, she was gone. All that remained was the broken cake she’d popped out of and the flogger she’d dropped on the carpet.

His first instinct was to follow her. The second was to return to the party, explain away his long absence by saying he’d walked her out to grab a cab and helped her avoid the paparazzi.
